Gaocheng Astronomical Observatory is situated in Duke Zhou Gong's shrine, Gaocheng Town, near Dengfeng in Henan Province. This site has a long tradition of atronomical observations, from the time of the Western Zhou up to early Yuan Dynasty. Actually, one can see a gnomon used for the Da Yan calendar in 729 AD and the great observatory of the Yuan Dynasty. |

The Peony, the emblem flower of Luoyang, is lauded as "Queen of flowers, with ethereal colour and celestial fragrance". Since the Tang Dynasty no Chinese city has been able to rival Luoyang in growing peonies boasting nearly 10 million peony trees with more than 700 species - all thanks to improvements in technology of peony cultivation. |
