The village gates in Zhaoxing are built in the same architectural style as the Drum Tower and the Roofed Bridge, all constructed with wood. Most of the gates are supported by eight columns with three doors: one front door, and two side doors for the purpose of providing extra protection.
There are altogether three gates in Zhaoxing. Each gate is covered with a roof which has protruding eaves decorated with symbols of good fortune. All the gates lead out to highways and usually are open at all times of day and night. Residents and visitors are free to come in and out. Only at rare occasions, when there is an important event, such as a religious rite, then the gates would be closed for the duration of the event.
The people of Zhaoxing are friendly and warm-hearted by nature. They would always prefer to have the gates open to welcome guests and visitors. When it's time for the visitors to leave, it is at these gates that the residents would bid their farewells with singing, wine, and their good wishes.
