Zhuhai Cuisine and Shopping

Cuisine in Zhuhai
Zhuhai local cuisine is Cantonese with a special emphasis on various kinds of sea food, such as oyster, crab, lobster and sleeve-fish.

Cantonese cuisine is commonplace. Seafood is a local specialty.
The Jinding Barbeque is by far and away the largest outdoor street barbeque in Zhuhai. It opens around 5:30PM each night on Jinding's main street. Steam rises, motorcycles whiz by, and music blares from shops as dozens of proprietary stands serve up street specialties (such as spicy grilled squid tentacles) well into the night to a lively crowd seated at plastic tables and chairs. Meals are served on plastic bag-covered plates and beer from the thinnest plastic cups in the world! Come here to experience regular Chinese street life, and leave full and a little tipsy.

One large and popular high-end seafood place is on a boat in Xiangzhou harbour. From Gongbei, take #9 or Sightseeing bus along Lover's Road until you see an island and bridge on your right, just as the bus turns left. Get off and walk across the bridge. From Jusco, walk south on the main street to the first corner and turn left. The bridge is one block in front.

Shi Shen Seafood City has two locations, one in a interesting old building a bit north of town on the coast road (#3, #10 or Sightseeing bus) and one near the border, a short distance along the road by the clock tower.

Food from other regions of China is also available. Hunan and Sichuan food is common, one well-known Hunan place is Huo Gong Dian in Gongbei.

1. There are three famous food streets in Zhuhai: The Tangren Food Street is the oldest and most renowned for its uniqueness in environment and variety in food.
2. The other two are the Chaozhou Attic and the Yingdu Food Market.
3. Western food is also popular in Zhuhai. Dishes cooked by decent Portuguese cooks are now coming into the fashion.
4. A simple restaurant opposite the Lianhua Dasha on Lianhua Rd serves excellent Hakka chicken. The Huang Tao restaurant, upstairs at the Friendship Plaza, has a reputation for serving Zhuhai's best dim sum in the mornings.

Walking North from Jusco on the main street, there are many restaurants:
1. Turn right at the first corner (Kentucky Fried Chicken) for a big seafood place and a good Sichuan place.
2. At the seafood place, turn left,. 20 meters along the side street is an alley on your right with assorted cheap plain restaurants.
3. At the end of the alley, turn left for more of the same including good Muslim noodles about half a block along on your right.
4. Back on the main street, turn left at first pedestrian overpass for good Dong Bei (Northeast China) food.
5. There is a fine Xinjiang place on the #4 bus route, one stop north of the Jida ferry port. That is part of a cluster of mid-range restaurants in a newly developed area.

For a cheap and filling snack, look for the tiny noodle places run by Muslims. Perhaps the best is next to WanZaiSha bus station in Xiangzhou.
May Flower Restaurant, Huang Chao Wu Yue Hua. Offers excellent seafood. As in many places in this area, you pick your fish from tanks. You also pick your own vegetables or other foods you would like and then specify the cooking methods. This is not the kind of place to come if you like to pick things off a menu, but if you're willing to pick out your food while it's still swimming, it's a great meal. There is a large airplane attached to the front of the building and rumors that you can eat in the airplane.

Shopping in Zhuhai
Frankly, Zhuhai is not a place where you can find numerous antiques or souvenirs. Local specialties are mostly sea products and fruits.

However, if you want to buy some general products, there are many options available. There are local shopping centers, like the Jiuzhou Cheng Shopping Centre, as well as some world-leading multinational supermarkets in Zhuhai.

There are also night markets and street markets in Zhuhai, especially in the Gongbei Area. The Duty-free Shopping Centre on Jingshan Rd opposite the Jiuzhou Cheng Shopping Center is a good place to find some low price genuine stuffs, such as wine and tobacco.

Yingbin Road is the main street that goes straight north from the border. Number one and number two north exits from the underground complex lead to opposite sides of Yingbin Road. It has several large shopping complexes with everything from cheap Chinese goods to trendy pricey international brands. On the left, there is Wanjia Department Store which is the most recognizable landmark in Gongbei. Any local or taxi driver will know where it is. Slightly further up, there is also the Yingbin Plaza on the right which has a McDonald's on the ground floor and a Kentucky Fried Chicken right above it. Most of the shops here sell clothing.

Lotus Road is a walking street, meaning a pedestrians only street. It is parallel to Yingbin Road (mentioned above) and a block east of it. At the south end, it starts on the west side of the bus station, opposite the northeast exit from the underground complex at the Macau border. The merchandise available here is similar to what you find in the underground shopping mall, primarily clothing and electronics. There is also a Bank Of China branch here with ATMs for foreign cards. In the middle stretch of the street, there are many bar booths out on the street with a few stools on each of the four sides. Drinks are cheap (10-15 for beer or coffee), and casual approaches by prostitutes are common.

On the other side of the bus station is a street with a few restaurants, including a good Thai one (look for elephants on the sign). There are also hotels and shops. Follow it a few blocks and it turns into Bar Street. For more information see the Drink section.
