The Chaoyang Gateway Arch was built as the town's eastern gate (The Yinghui Gate). The huge three-story structure occupies an area of 414 square meters and has a height of 24.5 meters, overlooking the thousands of households of the county, just like the famous Yellow Crane (Huang He) Tower in Wuhan and the Yueyang Tower in Hunan. It is composed of 48 big wooden pillars and numerous cross-beams, covered with triple roofs. Through 600 year's disasters, the Chaoyang Gateway Arch is the only extant tower. In the old days, it was cited as "a grand view in southern Yunnan". Today, the Chaoyang Gateway Arch is a public cultural center of Jianshui County.
The Chaoyang Tower, built in 1389, is located in the east end of Jiangzhong Road in Jianshui Country. It was the east gate tower (Yinghui Gate), center location of Jianshui. During the Yuanhe reign of the Tang Dynasty, an earth town was built here. In the 20th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, it was changed into a brick town. Its significance to Jianshui is the same as that of Tiananmen to Beijing; thus it has enjoyed the reputation of "the Miniature Tiananmen". It is the symbol of this ancient military town in the southeast border and an emblem of Jianshui, a historic and cultural city.
The huge three-story structure occupies an area of 414 square meters and has a height of 24.5 meters. It is composed of 48 big wooden pillars and numerous cross-beams, covered with triple roofs. Through 600 year's disasters, the Chaoyang Gateway Arch is the only extant tower. According to the record in the book named The Record of Jianshui Prefecture, the east gate tower is 100 Chi high. It towers up to the sky. People overlook the town from it. Masses of houses distribute in the town. The landscape is very beautiful. The sun rises from the east. Today, the Chaoyang Gateway Arch is a public cultural center of Jianshui County.
The whole town is bathed in sunlight. Watched in the distance, the tower is like the Huanghe Tower and the Yueyang Tower. A huge stele saying "Xiong Zhen Dong Nan" was hung in the east of the tower. It was written by Tu Rizhuo, a calligrapher of the Qing Dynasty. Another stele was hung in the west of the tower. It said "Fei Xia Liu Yun". The four words was the copy of the work of Zhangxu. The brushwork was rugged and powerful. There is an extant large bell in the tower. It's 2 meters high. It weights three to four tons. People can hear the bell in the distance.
